Forest Service Proposes Flat Fees for the Alaska Region for Outfitters

The Forest Service has proposed per day charges (aka flat fees) for a number of outfitter activities to comply with the court order in Tongass Conservancy v Glickman. The court required the agency to charge outfitters the same fee for the same activity. The fee charged for various types of hunting are per hunt, while the fees for other activities are per day. The rule summarizes fees for activities into 6 categories and examples of the fees charged for various activities are provided below.

For general recreation the per day charge is $5.00. For heli-skiing and over snow vehicle tours $10.00. Fresh water fishing and small game hunting the fee is $10. Livery operations and equipment rental the fee is $10. Separate fees for big game hunting are listed by animal and are levied per hunt, not per day.

The Forest Service is taking comments on the Alaska flat fee policy until June 2, 2008. http://www.americaoutdoors.org/member-resources_p.htm For future reference your password to access this area is reno.

Using Background Checks and Hiring Practices
See the New America Outdoors Advisory on How to Stay Out of Trouble with Your Hiring and Firing Practices

America Outdoors hired a law firm to review some of the issues regarding the use of background check and the practices and procedures that are necessary for you to follow if you make a decisions regarding the hiring or firing of a person based on a background check (which is governed by the Fair Credit Reporting Act). The briefs are in the password protected area under Member Resources, Risk Management.

It is important for you to note that the agreements that many background check firms use waive any claims that result from errors in the data that they provide to you.

We strongly recommend that you review this brief prior to beginning your recruitment. This summary provides information about the law and the steps you use to take to stay out of trouble.
